The CIA apparently has a website for kids it's pretty freaking hilarious, I suggest you peruse the part where they explain how they get all their information. Or better yet, I'll quote it to you:

"We collect the information from some sources that are "covert" --that is, other people's secrets. We persuade these people to tell us their secrets"
